Japanese cuisine holds a special place in my heart, and our trip to Japan was a culinary adventure that left me in awe. From the bustling streets of Shibuya to the historic lanes of Kyoto, each dish was a new discovery. Here are four memorable food experiences from our trip in April that stood out, offering a delightful mix of flavors, textures, and unique dining experiences.

Fluffy Pancakes

Spring Berry Fluffy Pancakes from Micasadeco & Cafe in Shibuya, Tokyo, Japan.

Our first full day in Shibuya began with a visit to Micasadeco & Cafe. The wait was nearly an hour, but the anticipation only heightened the experience. Though waiting can be a deterrent, it allowed us to plan our choices and we also got to know a few other travelers waiting in line with us. Once seated, I opted for the seasonal spring berry pancakes, while Rashid chose the popular Ricotta Cheese Pancakes. Each bite was like tasting a light, fluffy cloud—soft, airy, and delicately sweet without being overpowering. The accompanying syrup was a delightful addition, though these pancakes were delicious on their own.

Milk Tea Fluffy Pancakes from A Happy Pancake in Ginza, Tokyo, Japan.

We enjoyed these pancakes so much we sought them out again when we were in Ginza. We found a hidden gem called A Happy Pancake. I was thrilled to feast on these delectable puffs of flavor again and decided to try their milk tea pancakes while Rashid stuck with the classic original flavor. I also loved how you could even watch the chefs whip up the pancakes before your very eyes from the window looking into the kitchen. The combination of flavor and texture take these fluffy pancakes to a next level above the standard flat pancakes available in the US. I just found out there’s a fluffy pancake restaurant that just opened up within driving distance so I’m hoping this is a potential option to fulfill my cravings without having to book another flight every time.

Okonomiyaki

Okonomiyaki on the griddle at Okonomiyaki Shiraiwa in Asakusa, Japan.

A unique dish we hadn’t tried until this trip was Okonomiyaki. In Asakusa, we found Okonomiyaki Shiraiwa, where this savory, pancake-shaped dish—often referred to as “Japanese Pizza” or “Frittata”—was served. Cooked on a sizzling iron griddle at our table, the dish featured bonito flakes dancing in the heat. If you enjoy barbecue, this is a must-try savory delight.

Tonkatsu meal from Katsukura, Kyoto, Japan.

Tonkatsu

In Kyoto, we discovered the restaurant Katsukura near the Aeon Mall. Tonkatsu, a panko-breaded, deep-fried pork tenderloin cutlet, was a highlight. This meal set, including yuba-rolled vegetable cutlets, was crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside, making it a perfect end to a day of exploration. The efficient ordering system allowed us to review the menu and order while waiting to be seated, ensuring a quick and smooth dining experience. If you’re able to eat pork and enjoy a crispy fried but not oily meal, definitely add tonkatsu on the list. Even the local guide for our next tour complimented us on our choice and confirmed tonkatsu was her favorite dish.

Sushi

Of course, no list of memorable Japanese food experiences would be complete without sushi. At Mawaru Sushi Zanmai in Tsukiji, we experienced conveyor belt sushi for the first time. Seated at the bar with sushi chefs preparing fresh dishes before our eyes, we enjoyed a variety of sushi plates, each color-coded by price. The quality was great, and the constant flow of dishes riding down the conveyor belt made for a fun, time-efficient dining experience. Be mindful of your consumption, though—it’s easy to lose track and overspend!

These four experiences are just a glimpse of the culinary delights we encountered in Japan. I hope this list inspires you to embark on your own Japanese food adventure. I’d love to hear about your favorite Japanese dishes in the comments below. Sayonara, travel friends!
